Jackleen focuses on program, strategic planning and fundraising for Underscore and was a strategic development consultant for InvestigateWest to increase the visibility and reach of investigative reporting. She was the founding Executive Director of The Metcalf Institute for Marine + Environmental Reporting and is a former journalist and freelancer — her work has appeared in The Boston Globe, The Providence Journal and, more recently, Indian Country Today.

REPORTERSergio OLMOS

A probing, long-form journalist, Sergio left college in 2014 and landed in Hong Kong in the last 24 hours of the Umbrella Movement. He decided to buy a notebook and try being a journalist, thus launching his freelance career. For three years, Sergio traveled to more than 20 countries. His work during this time published with Latterly. He joined InvestigateWest in 2018 to report on concussions in high school sports. Él habla español.

ADVISORLee van der VOO

Lee formerly managed collaborative journalism projects for InvestigateWest in Oregon. Prior to her work in nonprofit journalism, she spent 10 years in Oregon newsrooms and freelanced for publications including The New York Times, Slate, and The Guardian. Lee is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Oregon Book Award for her book The Fish Market. She received special recognition for Oregon’s top reporting award, The Bruce Baer Award, four times.

ADVISORRebecca CLARREN

Rebecca has been writing about the rural West for 20 years. She formerly led InvestigateWest’s Indian Country Reporting pilot and conducted the research that underpins Underscore’s efforts in Indian Country. She has won the Hillman Prize, an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship, and received nine grants from the Fund for Investigative Journalism. Her work has appeared in MotherJones, High Country News, The Nation and Salon.com. Her novel, Kickdown, was shortlisted for the PEN/Bellwether Prize.
